5 on friday

I never figured out how to link up with this 5 on Friday thing.
But I love posting my random Friday thoughts so here ya go:

<ONE>
Last Sunday night I went to A Place to Land in Mt. Holly to take a lettering class. Pat: "Don't you already know how to write letters?" Y'all, it was so much fun! The studio is itty bitty, and the table held...mmmmm....10-12 people? It turned out being a whole lotta teachers, which didn't surprise me. Teachers love to doodle. I love to letter, but I want to be better at it. I did learn a lot from this class. Here is the piece they had us all create:

Then we got to create anything we wanted. If you go back to THIS post, you'll see the quote throw kindness around like confetti - something I've been wanting to use somehow, somewhere. So this is how I used it and I LOVE IT! After I did the lettering, I was planning to actually glue confetti around the border. But one of the ladies that taught the class offered to let me splatter it with watercolor paint while I was there, and I love how it turned out! It is now framed and hanging in my office.

Speaking of my office, it is now covered in quotations that I've lettered and framed. Makes me happy.

<TWO>
This past week, I extended my plank hold to SIX minutes. Did you read that right? SIX!!! My entire body shakes through the last 2 minutes and drips with sweat...but I can do it.
Also, for the first time in my life, I am able to do 10 consecutive push-ups. Real ones. "Men" ones. I attribute this to Insanity. My upper body and core strength are improving greatly and that makes me so happy.
I'm starting to see definition in my upper abdomen! Now if only I could get the cliff over my c-section incision to disappear I'd be stoked...any advice?

<THREE>
In case you didn't already know this, my 3 year old makes me laugh. I mean, seriously LAUGH. The things he says sometimes just stop me in my tracks. Where does he have the life experience to come up with some of these things? Being that I sat in on a lot of speech IEP meetings in my experience as an assistant principal, I learned a lot about how to correct articulation errors. Finn is pretty articulate. The errors he makes are age appropriate, but when I show him how to fix the errors - he does. And his carryover is good. So for example, if he says "Fank you", I tell him to look at me. I model how to make the /th/ sound and tell him to watch how I put my tongue between my teeth (aka stick out your tongue). He then repeats it and is successfully able to say "Thank you". On Wednesday, we ran through the drive through at Jimmy John's to pick up some sandwiches to eat in the car on the way to VBS. As we pull up to the window, Finn wants me to ask the lady at the register what her name is. I ask her. It starts with /th/ - I can't remember exactly what it was. Thelma I think? I tell him her name is "Thelma" and he says to both her and me, "You should stick out your tongue when you say that. Look at me. Thelma." (and he is sticking out his tongue as he says it). Poor lady, she had no idea how to respond. I just shook my head and laughed. He really does internalize what I tell him.

<FOUR>
Two out of the last three times I ran at 5:00 am in our neighborhood, I've had to jump over a snake. If you know me, you know how serious my fear of snakes is. Although we have street lights, they are not quite bright enough for my taste. You can see shadows, but you never really know what you're coming upon until you're right there at it. So about 2 feet away I realize what it is and at that point my best choice is to pray, then jump, then sprint. The first snake was HUGE and was on the sidewalk. So I started running in the street - there are no cars out that early. The one today was MEDIUM sized, and it was in the street. I can't win for losing. This makes almost 10 snakes I've seen either in our yard or neighborhood so far this summer.

<FIVE>
I have two weeks to find childcare for my boys. Beginning August 17, I need someone to watch them full time. No, I'm not a procrastinator. It was a sudden thing that came about yesterday. If you have any advice, know anyone who watches kids in their home or a childcare center that's affordable...let me know. I'm pretty desperate.

Til next week,

30 day gratitude photo challenge part 3

In case you wanted to see the gratitude challenge one more time:

~Here are my day 15-21 pictures of gratitude~

Day Fifteen - Family
One thing I love to do and make sure I do every year is have family pictures made. And I am sure that Pat and I get in at least one picture. We usually use these for our Christmas cards each year. Last year, we had Kellan's newborn photos done by Coreyanna Photography (highly recommend). I had two large canvases made from that session to place in our living room and I absolutely love the outcome:

Most of my extended family lives in Michigan. I have a few family members in California, Georgia, and Florida as well. It is extremely difficult to keep up with everyone. I am so thankful for FaceBook. I feel like I am able to see the lives my family live from afar, and they get to see my family. I've had people mention that I post a lot of photos and a lot of little things about the kids ~ perhaps too much (what?). Well, this is mainly for my family. I want them to know Finn and Kellan, even if they have never seen or rarely see them. Moral: If you think I post too much, unfollow/unfriend me. Thank you. I'm so grateful that I get to see my family every day on FaceBook:

Day Sixteen - Inspiration
As a runner, I don't run to beat others. I run to beat myself. To set personal records and goals. I bought a Nike Sports Watch from Best Buy a few years back that helps to track my progress as a runner. It has GPS, and monitors my speed and distance. I hook it up to the computer, and it shows my route, overall pace, and helps me to set goals. It gives you virtual medals, who doesn't love a good pat on the back from Nike? I'm grateful I have the motivation/inspiration to exercise and stay healthy:

Pinterest has been another source of inspiration I'm grateful for. And man, if I knew about Pinterest before I got married, I would've been ecstatic!!! Can I have another wedding please (same husband, just another reception)? I use Pinterest boards for fashion, photography, home improvement, cooking, weight loss, gift ideas, baby/child advice, education, etc. Below is a picture of my "Principal" board. I pin things that I want to remember for staff meetings, my Monday Memos...just generally when I need some inspiration or need to give inspiration to my staff:

Day Seventeen - Weather
One thing I have a love/hate relationship with in the summer is the weather. I'm a 70-80 degree kind of gal. And where I live, in the summer it lingers in the upper 90s. Thankfully, every afternoon (well, just about every afternoon) we have a summer storm. It cools things down for a little while, but the next day like clockwork - it's 98 degrees again. The summer storms roll in around the same time every early evening; right as I leave work. Here's a picture over the tree line outside of my school:

And then 2 hours later...same day...in my back yard:

We bought this hammock this summer for my summer mini sessions and I love it. I am grateful for it most after the summer storm clears out and it's in the mid 70s. I'll swing on it with my boys before bedtime. Then after the boys go down, Pat and I sometimes will swing on it for an hour or so while we enjoy a glass of wine and good conversation.

Day Eighteen - Change
Man, I had a grand idea for today. I wanted to have a picture of each boy holding a picture of themselves from their earlier days. I started with Finn, which is where I went wrong. "Hold this picture up buddy" and he puts it in front of his face. "No sweetie, put it down a little lower" and he sets it at his feet. "Finn, lift it up a bit" and he extends it as far as he can into the air. So, after a few deep breaths, this is what I catch and I give up:

I didn't even look at the picture after I took it because I was so frustrated. After uploading it, I was dying laughing. I mean, he's making the same face!!! Can you get any better? I'm so grateful for my little tornado even when he frustrates the snot out of me. Needless to say, I didn't even attempt to have Kellan do this. I'm sure he would just end up eating the picture or frame. Or both.

Day Nineteen - Laughter
Is there anything better than the sound of a child laughing? I think not. Finn's laugh reminds me of my Pabu's laugh. Deep and throaty, especially when he is deep in belly laugh where he is to the point he's laughing so hard he's practically holding his breath. I love it. Kellan's laugh is more loud belly laugh. I wanted to get a few of him on this day since it's so hard to catch Finn truly laughing on camera. All I have to do is make a silly sound or face to get Kellan to laugh. Here is one that I promise is not just a smile, he was laughing so hard:

And so maybe this next picture isn't Kellan laughing (nor is it on the same day - oops). Kellan has been falling asleep in the high chair during dinner a lot recently. This picture is of the first time he did it. Pat, Finn and I were deep in laughter watching him drift and nod. Sweet tired boy:

Day Twenty - Food
I love food. I'm a picky eater, but I love food. I won't go on and on about my weight loss journey with Weight Watchers, but I will tell you that I lost a lot of weight on the program. What I learned most was it's all about making a good choice. Which I think is more of a general life lesson, applied to food. It was so hard to cut out all of our delicious full-fat meals we were so used to. Especially thick sourdough bread with garlic butter - that's one thing I miss most. My God I love bread. We use a site called Skinny Mom to find a lot of our meals we make Pat makes. Here are two beauts that I MADE this summer. Not from Skinny Mom - the stuffed avocado recipe is easy and can be found HERE. Here's a picture:

I would change it a bit to make the chicken a little creamier somehow. I also added cheese - big shock.

Next, we have salads pretty often during the summer. I am the official salad maker. I love making beautifully colored salads. The lettuce for this salad was indeed grown by Master Finn in his garden and it was delicious. I love salads, thankfully. They're zero WW points until you add cheese (light feta), dressing (light Asian vinaigrette) and protein (we add blackened chicken and avocado).

Pat makes a killer Thai Chicken Salad with Spicy Peanut Sauce (the one salad I make him make) and it's recipe is HERE. Highly recommend you try it. To. Die. For.

Day Twenty-One - Home
Pretty soon after Finn was born, we realized our two bedroom townhome wasn't cutting it for 2 adults, 1 baby, and 2 dogs. We had always dreamed of moving across the street into a neighborhood called The Gates. Shortly after Finn's first birthday, we were able to make the move. We live on a short cul-de-sac street called Mountainridge Dr. And I love it. Is our house perfect? No. But it meets our needs, is something I'm proud of, and is a place I plan to stay until both boys are through with college. It is 4 bedrooms, so I don't anticipate us necessarily growing out of it. Here's the front:

And one of the huge draws to buying this house was the lot. It's at the end of the cul-de-sac, and it is one of the larger lots in the neighborhood. I love our back yard! Excuse the garden in the picture - we didn't plant it this year, so it is overgrown. You get the point:

I'm tremendously grateful that my husband and I have jobs that allow us to live here. Another benefit is that our neighbors are wonderful. They love our children, offer to babysit, and look out for us.

See you next week for my final set of photos from this challenge: days 22-30!

5 on friday

I'm new to this "5 on Friday" thing and I'm not really sure I'm doing it right.
I get that you're supposed to post five random things, but don't really get
the "linking up" part of it. We'll see and here goes...

<ONE>
Today, my 3 year old allowed my 8 month old to literally beat up on him and didn't retaliate. Kellan was vigorously hitting Finn in the head, pulling his hair, scratching his face, and putting all his weight on him. Finn didn't complain in the least, didn't whine and cry or tattle. He was cracking up. And that made Kellan laugh. Both boys were laughing hysterically. It was the first time I've seen Finn really act like a big brother. More mature. And that in turn made me smile and laugh. I wanted to make a video but I also wanted to be in the moment, so I set down my phone.

<TWO>
My friend Leslie introduced me this week to a show called Chrisley Knows Best. And if you haven't ever seen it, you must. I die laughing. I started from Season 1, Episode 1 on Thursday and I'm almost through Season 1 already. Mindless hilarity, which everyone needs now and again.

<THREE>
Summer colds are horrible. I am in the middle of one right now and am looking forward to the day I can breathe again.

<FOUR>
It is almost August and I'm in shock. August is one of my favorite months of the year (not because it's my birthday month). I love all things Back to School. I've truly enjoyed the slow month of July, having Fridays off with my boys, and playing in the pool/lake. In August, one of my good friends is getting married in Asheville and I'm very excited for their wedding. Of course, school supplies start coming out in the stores...and there's just something about fresh pencils and paper that makes me feel giddy. Also on my birthday this year, a small group of friends are running the Yiasou Greek Festival 5K with me, then joining me for a nice birthday breakfast.

<FIVE>
This Sunday night I'm taking a lettering class from 7-9pm in Mt. Holly. I've always loved lettering but have never taken a class. I'm very excited.

30 day gratitude photo challenge part 2

This is part 2 (of 4 parts) to my 30 day photo challenge. In 14 days, I have taken more pictures of both of my boys with my Canon 70D than I have...ever. Is that sad? It is. So I know that this challenge is accomplishing what it originally intended (see previous post of days 1-7 by clicking HERE).

Day Eight - Sleep
I was dreading this day. How am I going to take pictures of sleep? Sometimes, Finn will fall asleep on the way home from Leah's and I'll get him nestled on the couch with his "Pooh Blankie", but of course on day eight that doesn't happen. So, 8:30 pm - my favorite time of day (did I say that out loud?) rolls around and both boys are out. OUT. I wait another 10 minutes and then sneak into each boy's room, flip on the hall light, and snap 2 pictures with a really high ISO. Very grainy, very dark, but very sleep. And I love how the pictures turned out. I mean, truly sweet sleeping babies.

Here's Finn:

Here's Kellan:

Do you see why I eat them up every chance I get? I so treasure these pictures. And I'm truly grateful for sleep, mine especially now that both boys sleep pretty solidly through the night.

Day Nine - Holidays
The most recent holiday was the 4th of July and here are a few of my decorations I put up in my house for this holiday. One is a clothespin wreath I made last year, idea from Pinterest. Super simple and quick to make, but it doesn't really look good with our door color. Most wreaths don't. I'm thinking about having the HOA approve a black door. I think it'll go better with most wreaths and door hangings. Anyway, here's my wreath:

And I bought this Independence Day garland from Jane.com - and if you don't know about this site, please click HERE and explore it. Omigod, I'm pretty sure this is the reason I stay broke. There are clothing for me and the boys, shoes, jewelry, photography props - all very reasonably priced. This garland was $9.99 last year and I used it for last summer's mini sessions. Now I use it for a mantle decoration.

This fourth of July is well documented in my second blog post. Click HERE to read. I am grateful for the country we live in. Not getting into any politics, but I am very thankful to live here.

Day Ten - Kindness
My goal on day ten was to capture kindness between my boys. But first, here's something I found on Pinterest a few weeks back that I love, and I want to somehow hang this in my office, just not sure how.
I think the world would be a better place if more people were kind. I love how Ellen concludes every show wish, "Be kind to one another."

Finn is touch and go with his kindness toward his brother. He'll be kind for about 10 seconds and then body slam him to the ground, you know...what big brothers do best.

So it's hard to catch kindness between them in a picture. Not impossible, but difficult. Here are two that to me, show kindness between brothers:

 Here, Finn is "sharing" his fishing rod with Kellan. Finn isn't the best share-er. Is that a word? But I asked him if he would be a sweet big brother and show Kellan how to go fishing. And he did, for about 5 seconds.
Here, I'm not so sure this is truly kindness. Finn didn't want Kellan to play with his latch board, so he was kindly pushing him off the ottoman to the floor. But, he threw and kiss and a hug in there as he pushed him to the ground. Which I thought was hilarious.

I'm grateful whenever anyone is kind...but especially those brief moments of kindness Finn shows Kellan. Often through a slight smile, too-rough hug, or a sweet kiss on the cheek. Finn shows kindness most when we're driving in the car and Kellan cries. Finn will try to make him laugh or sing to him and that totally melts me.

Day Eleven - Friendship
This past weekend was spent on Lake Bowen in South Carolina with our friends Dean & Jenn and their two children Cate & Maddie. Cate is 5 and Maddie is 3. Last summer, Maddie & Finn did not get along. It was the age. They each wanted each other's toys but didn't want to share their own toys. This summer? So. Much. Better. They all played together well and the girls wanted to be so helpful with Kellan. Here are a few moments from the weekend as these four bonded as friends. I'm so grateful for our friendship with the Shatleys.

Day Twelve - Music
I love Pandora. I listen to it (sometimes) on runs, at work, while I'm in the shower, getting ready for my day, during meals, anytime I can. I took a picture of Pandora playing on my phone and I'm a tad embarrassed that you'll be seeing my favorite Pandora station. No, I'm not 15.

Yes, I love Taylor Swift. I don't care that she makes millions off of dating guys, dumping them, then writing songs about them. Whatever works. What I do love about her is what she does with her money. She surprises her fans with gifts, pays for their cancer treatments, shows up to surprise them...she is kind.

So the reason I listen to her station on Pandora is not because I like her, which I do, but I love all the music that plays on it even if it isn't hers. It's very fast paced, upbeat. I like working out to it, and it keeps me motivated to stay moving even if I'm just sitting down at my desk or editing pictures.

My other picture is of Kellan playing a "guitar":

This is actually a guitar we bought for Finn. Both he and Kellan love it. In fact, both of them love music. They love to play on the drum set Finn got from his friend Beau. They love both toy guitars we have at the house. Finn loves his harmonica his Baba got him. He loves banging on our piano. I think they will be musicians of some sort.

And that makes me happy. They get it naturally. Their Baba (my dad) is a musician and their dad is a musician.

Day Thirteen - Time
I really didn't want to take pictures of clocks. This one was kind of difficult. There are times of day I'm thankful for (8:30 pm being one of them). But there are also times in life, seasons, etc. that I'm grateful for. One is the early quiet mornings. I didn't used to be a morning person. In fact, if I didn't have children I probably still would not be. But now, most days, I wake up at 5:00 if not earlier, to have peace and quiet before the day truly begins. I drink coffee, check emails, maybe go for a run. This particular morning Kellan was up at 5:30 - and the rest of the world was asleep. We killed time for several hours and watched as daylight crept over the lake. Quiet, cool, one of my new favorite times of day.

This picture was also a morning picture. Kids still in pajamas. But I like this because it's quiet time with friends (and a dog photobomber). All 3  "sharing" a fishing rod and taking turns "catching fish". It's not often all 3 of them sit still in the same space, and peacefully share one toy.

Day Fourteen - Creativity
If someone asked me to describe myself in one word, "creative" would probably be it. Now, that doesn't mean organized or perfect or anything like that. It just means I like to do and make things. I was in a wreath making phase a few years ago. I sometimes make props for photo shoots. I like to paint and draw and do lettering, especially on envelopes. If I had a spare room in my house it'd be my creativity room. But I don't, so this is where it all ends up:

Pretty bad, huh?

A few friends had been posting on FaceBook about these places where you go create door-hangings (not really wreaths). Basically you go pick out a wooden cut of something, paint it, "design" it, eat/drink, and have someone make it look pretty for you. A place in Conover, which used to be called The Freckled Frog, hosted a small group of our school staff one night last week. Now it's called Hip Hip Whooray.

We had so much fun! Everyone except me chose the same design (a square-ish shape with their last initial in the middle). I chose the state of North Carolina. We spent about an hour painting. Then we sat down and ate dinner - we each brought something to share. They took our creations to a back room and voila...
I'd love to say I made it all by myself. Literally all I did was paint the black and turquoise inside the pre-drawn chevron lines. Then I told them what I wanted written on it, that I wanted it sprayed with a glittery film and a bow.

So. Stinking. Cute.

I'm ready for some Panthers football so I can put this on my door, which will FOR SURE need to be painted black at this point.

So I'll see you next week with days 15-21!
Are you doing the 30 day gratitude photo challenge? If so, leave me a comment with a link to where you're posting. I'd love to see what you're grateful for!

30 day gratitude photo challenge

If you read my bio over to the right, you'd know I'm a photographer on the side. I've always been interested in photography and love that I am able to supplement my income with it on the weekends. I recently traded in my starter Canon DSLR for a newer and nicer version. The problem ("problem") I'm running into is that I only use it for paid shoots. Initially when I bought my starter camera it was because I was pregnant with Finn and wanted to learn how to take good pictures of my kids. I'm guilty of not using it for that purpose. It's so much easier to use my phone. And my phone takes really really bad pictures.

I saw this 30-day gratitude photo challenge on Pinterest and thought, what a great way to spend summer...thinking about what I'm grateful for and forcing myself to use my DSLR daily...not for paid shoots.

I've made it through day 7 so far. I figured waiting until day 30 to post would make for a very L.O.N.G. blog post that most people would get bored reading through. So I'm going to post it weekly. Here are my first seven days of gratitude:

Day One - Words
"Frozen" - It was a 100 degree day and our air went out. My husband left for New Orleans that morning so when the boys and I got home at 5:30 pm, our house was HOT. I had to call every repair place I could remember a TV jingle for to get someone to come fix it that night, make dinner for both boys, do baths, find fans...it was a miserable night. I finished it with one of these frozen greek yogurt bars. Y'all, I'm telling you...if you haven't tried them, you haven't lived! I'm grateful I found these 100 calorie treats and that they come in many different flavors.

I was going to join my husband in New Orleans in a few days and needed a new dress to wear to the gala on Saturday night. I went to bevello, which is a boutique in Birkdale that I love. 1) They give educator discounts and 2) You can get a really unique piece of clothing for a relatively good price. I love their bag and all the words on it. The dress I bought made me feel all of these words. I'm grateful I can find clothing like this in a nearby store and not pay hundreds of dollars.

Day Two - Technology
Did you read my post yesterday about Stitch Fix? This was the day my box arrived, and without technology, I wouldn't have my Stitch Fixes. So I'm very grateful for technology and my fix!

Day Three - Nature
So now I'm in New Orleans and there's not a whole lotta nature to photograph. I was very grateful our hotel had a Starbucks though, and that I got my iced coffee and sat in a huge comfortable chair by a tree (which I think was real)...so that's nature right?

And in walking down the streets of NOLA, I loved how they had the names of the streets on the sidewalk. "In" the sidewalk. They place tiles in the sidewalk and I thought it was so charming. Of course the sidewalks are all broken up but I think that's part of the charm. I know cement and tile are not "nature", but I'm grateful for everything I got to see as part of the NOLA culture and because it was outdoors I'm counting it as nature:

Day 4 - Clothing
I'm sure by reading my blog you know how much I love clothing. My first picture is a selfie - which I hate taking. But I have been working very hard to lose my baby weight. I'm down almost 25 lbs and only have 5 more to go (at minimum). So my pre-Kellan clothes are beginning to fit comfortably and boy am I grateful for that.

In strolling the streets of NOLA, we found this shoe boutique called Shoe-La-La. It was so much fun, and I'm 99.9% certain this is where Lady Gaga goes to buy her shoes. I'm grateful for fun stores like this, not because it's anything I'd consider purchasing, but because it's fun to look. And, I mean, people actually purchase shoes like this and wear them!

Day 5 - Knowledge
This was a difficult one for me especially being on vacation in NOLA. I'm not necessarily grateful for what I took pictures of, I was just searching for something to fit the bill. All over NOLA, locals work the streets doing anything they can to make a buck. Selling water bottles, tap dancing, playing instruments, reading palms, tarot cards...etc. The first picture is of a palm/tarot reader who claims to have knowledge of your future. Her name is Antoinette and I loved her sign and how she decorated her name.

The next picture is in the same street. In the foreground a lady is having her palm read by another reader (knowledge), but I love how there are street musicians playing and a crowd sitting in front of the cathedral watching and listening. I love even more the minion in the background. I mean, this guy has to have some knowledge of how not to throw up wearing a full costume in heat that feels like 120 degrees.

Day 6 - Memories
If I were home on day 6 I would've taken pictures of old photos - which are my favorite memories. But since I was on vacation, I took pictures that would become memories. I'm so grateful for friends that were able to allow me to make memories on vacation. Leah, Leslie, and Barbara took care of my sweet kiddos and Betsy took care of our dog kiddo. The first picture is actually a cell phone picture (shame). I wasn't going to give the store clerk or a stranger my DSLR. Sorry. We found this hat store with fabulous hats. I actually loved my hat and contemplated buying it. But $40 for a hat that would mainly sit in my closet seemed like a splurge I wasn't willing to take.

The next picture is another minion picture with our dear friends Dean and Jenn. We paid $5 to take this picture. Mainly because I'm sure the minion pays bank for dry cleaning vomit out of his costume every day. Seriously. It was over 100 degrees.

Day 7 - Innovation
I could've taken 20 innovation photos in NOLA. People there are creative, to say the least. And the thing I'm grateful for is the entertainment that their innovation created. Jenn and I were walking down a street and see this guy riding a motorized cooler, dressed like Elvis. That, folks, is innovation. I was in shock I was able to turn my camera on and get my settings right to capture this innovator in motion within about 3 seconds. I think he was driving to a location to sell water bottles to tourists? Gotta give the man credit.

And there was a cork store on one of the side streets. Everything was made of cork. Shoes, purses, skateboards, shelves, belts, etc. Very innovative and interesting to look at.

Will be back in a week with days 8-14! Stay tuned.
Fondly,
